What do you need to say to your boss to convince them to sign you up to BD Matters?

If you improve my skills, I will bring in more new business

The new business landscape and the skills required to be successful in BD is becoming ever more complex and often there is no formal training given around the development of these skills. BD people are expected to be copywriters, events managers, cold callers, digital specialists etc . It is unrealistic to think one person can be exceptional in all the skills required, but if you want me to be the best I can be, I need  access to top learning and professionals who can teach me new things.

I would like to know how much training and development budget is currently given to me or the business development team in our organisation? Is it proportional to other departments? If there is a lack of investment, then it makes it harder for me to improve my skills and in-turn give the business what it is looking for.

There are wider opportunities for the business

BD Matters also hosts a number of high level speakers on their interviews and these could give us direct insights into brands and sectors that I can then use in my prospecting and marketing strategy. They have seen other members take these insights and secure meetings and opportunities off the back of these interviews. They can also host our agency in the sessions and pair us with potential prospects. The networking events and online promotion will give us exposure to the people we’re trying to reach.

Retain me, keep me happy and attract better talent

I will be happier and more likely to stay in my role if I feel invested in and BD Matters is an investment in my career and it demonstrates that you care about me and you want me to be successful. Being a member gives us a competitive edge when trying to recruit other new business people which are so sought-after. It will also help you hold onto your best talent by showing your commitment through our company's involvement.

I’m lonely and I appreciate you don’t always have the time to dedicate

Most BD people or teams make up only one percent of their agency, and that’s quite daunting, especially when there’s huge pressure of financial objectives weighing on my shoulders. I carry that burden and also the other 99% don’t fully understand what it means to do my job.  BD Matters provides me a community of like-minded individuals that can relate to my job.  They empathise and can be a ‘shoulder to cry on’, or a huge motivator!  It can get me out of my situation and help me deal with new scenarios, which people in our company might not be able to do.

With all the will in the world, you are busy carrying out lots of different other jobs and new business is one of those things that needs constant support. BD Matters can act as a team extension and give me instant support whenever I need it via the slack channel and peer to peer support which is so important today.

My mental health will be so much better

The wins and losses, the long hours, and pressure of BD has a huge impact on my mental health. As new business people we have to maintain a constant positivity regardless of what’s going on in our personal lives or if we’ve had a bad couple of months. BD Matters is a platform to help me be the best I can be through learning from others who have been in my position.

There is nothing out there like BD Matters

There are some training courses out there, but they are short lived and none of them give me ongoing community support. BD Matters can be used for accountability and I can dip in and out at my own pace. There are even on demand videos that you can watch in your own time, so you never miss anything.

If it’s not working, it can be cancelled any time

We belive we offer fantastic value for money.  We run events, meet-ups and masterclasses, every month. There are also further physical events throughout the year and also give me access to the e-learning portal. They are more than happy to give us a free trial and if in the event I cannot attend one of the events, somebody else in the agency can swap in and take my place. BD Matters can help not just the business people, but also client services and anybody who sits in a senior leadership role and is responsible for client development or new business growth.
