LinkedIn vs Email

Battle notes from the match of the century

Earlier this month LinkedIn took on Email in a boxing ring with two expert opponents battling each side.

The opening statement, from the red corner and Anthony Leung, fighting the side of LinkedIn….

  • LinkedIn has the reach advantage - its reached 1 billion users – from rapid growth in recent years, doubling users in the last 5 years - it’s the hot place to be.

  • There is more than one way to win on LinkedIn. You can adjust LinkedIn to your own strengths and style.

  • If the sales game is your strength, invest in Sales Navigator or or if you’re like me - Brand Building / Demand Gen is your game - invest in creating content that is relevant, relatable and engaging to your audience.

Email’s retort, from the blue corner and Jamie Woodbridge in defence of email!

  • There are over 4 billion email users worldwide.

  • ~ 60% people check their email in the morning before anything else.

  • According to ONS, using email is the most used internet activity- over 85%

  • Emails can be tailored to your segmented marketing lists, which will drive more engagement when the content is customised.

Anthony’s sum up: How to deliver the best on LinkedIn:

> Focus on content and value.

LinkedIn is the living, breathing, brand building platform that will earn your audience’s trust and put you at top of mind if you build content that puts their needs first. If you want to do that, you’ll need to put in the work first to understand your own brand and your audience. That’s how I help my clients. And once you’ve got that down, you’re golden.

Jamie’s sum up: How to deliver the best on email:

> Segmentation and Personalisation - tailor the message, deliver the right content, but start simple and evolve over time. Buyers or Non-buyers to begin with and then look to lapsed, partners, suppliers, etc. With personalisation, just think about encouraging conversation.

> Use the right platform for Email Management and Automation (MailChimp, Constant Contact, Beehive, and a host of others are available). Analytics for web traffic and CRM systems such as Salesforce or Hubspot have good integrations.
